Aerial photo of construction siteSouthern Water’s new pumping station will comprise four stand-by pumps, capable of dealing with 9,000 litres of water every second.

It will be completely underground and located on the eastern end of Bransbury Park next to the existing pumping station.

It will provide the best means of managing the stormwater flows and will offer vitally needed support to Eastney Pumping Station to improve both its response time and overall security to Portsmouth during storm conditions.

The shaft to house the new pumps will be approximately 20 metres across and 15 metres deep and will house the new pumps. The electrical equipment to operate the pumps will be housed in the existing pumping station.

Work started in June 2008 and is due to complete at the end of summer 2010. Once the pumping station shaft has been installed it will be covered and grassed over, ensuring there is no visible structure above the ground in the park.

DURING CONSTRUCTION
Crane on construction siteA small area (less than 10 per cent) of the park has been closed and will reopen when the project has been completed.

A temporary site compound in Bransbury Park has been set up next to the existing pumping station. Henderson Road car park will be closed until construction work has finished.

The footpath that runs along the western boundary of Southern Water’s existing Eastney Pumping Station in Henderson Road to Wake Lawn will be closed during the construction works and pedestrians will be diverted along the southern end of the football pitch. Most of the construction work will be carried out from Monday to Friday from 7am until 7pm and on Saturdays from 8am until 1pm.

CONSIDERATE CONSTRUCTORS
Crane and 4Delivery staff on construction siteSouthern Water and its contractor working on the project 4Delivery have signed up to the Considerate Constructors Scheme, an independent body set up to ensure work is carried out with consideration to the local community.

The site recently received an outstanding score of 37 out of 40 during a Considerate Constructors audit. Auditor Mike Petter described the site as “exceptional” with a high standard of initiatives which deserved recognition.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
The safety of the public and workforce is the highest priority for Southern Water.

During construction work you are asked to take care in the vicinity of the works and we would ask you to advise children of the dangers of playing near construction sites.

4Delivery has carried out health and safety talks at local schools to raise awareness of the work taking place.
