We are investing more than £10 million at Goddards Green Wastewater Treatment Works, West Sussex.
The improvements will enhance the quality of treated wastewater leaving the works and also reduce smells coming from the site in Cuckfield Road.
A £1.9 million odour reduction scheme is now under way. This includes the upgrade of the systems which control smells. New units and covers to contain smells are also being built. Construction is expected to take about 12 months.
In a separate £9.1 million scheme, new equipment will be built. This will ensure the wastewater is treated to an even higher standard before it is recycled into the River Adur.
The scheme will also include a new storm storage tank, which will be able to hold more than 3,000 litres of water during storms, preventing the risk of the treatment works becoming overwhelmed during heavy rain and flooding.
This work, due to start in 2012, is part of our ongoing environmental programme and is being carried out to meet stringent new standards set by the Environment Agency. Both schemes are being carried out by contractor 4Delivery.
Following the upgrades, the treatment works will be able to treat up to 26 million litres of wastewater per day – enough to fill nearly 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools - from a population of 46,000 people.
