As the work progresses on the Brighton and Hove Wastewater Treatment Scheme, the project team shares its highs and lows through blog diaries

As you may have noticed the defining feature of the new wastewater treatment works at Peacehaven, a grass roof, is now complete. The living grass roof, the biggest of its kind in the country and one of the largest in Europe, measures almost 18,000 square metres, the size of  four and a half football pitches.

It has been designed to blend in with the natural beauty of the South Downs and the turf has been grown from a special mix of downland grass seeds. It is "living", so will respond, adapt and evolve with the landscape.

You may have noticed a barge has reappeared off the coast of Peacehaven. This follows on from the work we did last summer to sink the new long sea outfall into place at Friars Bay. We are currently doing some work around the diffusers, which are located at the end of the outfall. These ensure the wastewater is dispersed over a wider area.

The barge is assisting with the placement of rocks around the diffusers. As the diffusers sit above the sea bed, rocks are used to protect them from anchors and equipment used by vessels in the area. This work should be complete by the end of October.
