Work begins
The scheme is underway. The first sites to see any work taking place are Marine Gate, Marine Drive and Ovingdean in Brighton, Portobello in Telscombe Cliffs and Friars Bay and Lower Hoddern Farm in Peacehaven.
Fencing goes up
There is visible activity at Marine Gate and Friars Bay as fencing and reptile protection work is carried out ready for construction work to commence for digging of the shafts. Over in Marine Drive one lane of the dual carriageway has been closed in both directions (just past Roedean Café and the traffic island) to enable construction of a new pumping station.
Portobello make-over begins
Southern Water's current wastewater treatment works at Portobello will be turned into a pumping station to take the wastewater on to the Peacehaven Wastewater Treatment Works. Construction teams will begin work at Portobello which when complete will have a grassed roof and has been designed not to affect sea views from Telscombe Tye.
Major work begins at the main Peacehaven site
Following the environmental, archaeological and diversion of water and electricity works the main earth moving activities begin in preparation for the construction of the treatment works.
Construction 'Springs' into action
One of the largest marine excavators in the world, the "Nordic Giant" will dig a trench in the sea bed to lay the pipe. When completed the 2.5km long sea outfall pipe at Friars Bay will recycle the treated wastewater out to sea.
Tunnelling work begins at Ovingdean and Peacehaven
The latest proven tunnelling techniques and machinery, tunnel boring machines (TBM) will be used to construct the new sewer tunnel.
Laying of the outfall pipe
The outfall pipe will be towed into position and lowered into the trench created by the "Nordic Giant".
Work on major structures commences at the Peacehaven site
Work to excavate and construct the main underground tanks that treat the wastewater will begin shortly followed by construction of the main buildings.
Tunnelling completes
Main tunnelling work will be complete and the TBM will be removed from the ground.
Shafts complete
The work at Marine Gate, Marine Drive, Friars Bay and Roedean Way are all due to finish this spring
A world beater
The record breaking grass roof will start to be become visible at the Peacehaven treatment work site and the landmark structure at Marine Drive will also become visible.
Cleaner Seas for East Sussex
The final pieces of work will be complete and the wastewater treatment works will be up and running. It means everyone can now enjoy cleaner seas in East Sussex.
