River Arun Tidal Abstraction Scheme near Hardham

Aerial visualisation of the Hardham Tidal River Abstraction Scheme

Southern Water is working towards applying for planning permission for a new source of water supply. The source will be from the River Arun in Horsham District in Sussex.

The scheme involves a new abstraction on the tidal River Arun with a water storage pond, pumping stations and a 1.8km pipeline to the existing Hardham Water Supply Works where the water would be treated.

The scheme would enable Southern Water to pump up to 10 million litres of water a day from the River Arun, which will be vital during times of low river flow and drought.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to Horsham District Council in Autumn 2008. A leaflet providing information on the scheme is available to download from this page. Keep an eye of this website for up-to-date information about the scheme.
