Leak detection

Southern Water - locating a leak using a listening stickSouthern Water delivers one of the lowest levels of leakage per property of all water and sewerage companies in the UK and faces the toughest leakage target in the industry.

We think if we ask our customers not to waste water it is important we demonstrate that we value it as well.

Our team of leakbusters works round the clock to find and repair leaks on our 13,600 kilometres of water mains.

In September, October and November of 2011, the company beat the leakage target set by regulator Ofwat by eight million litres of water per day. We are currently recording our lowest leakage figures for four years and have the lowest leakage level of all water and sewerage companies in the South East.

We have invested £20 million since 2010 to reduce leaks and replace 50 kilometres of ageing water mains, with more replacements to follow over the next five years.

In 2010/11 we repaired more than 22,000 leaks, a company record, and we fixed more than 95 per cent of all visible leaks within 24 hours. That winter was the coldest on record and this impacted severely on leakage levels as pipes and water mains burst at an alarming rate.

We are installing water meters with leak alarms in most South East homes by 2015, saving millions of litres of water every day.

Community-minded customers made 23,549 calls to us in 2010/11 to report leaks and help stop supplies being wasted.
