THOUSANDS OF LITRES OF WATER TO BE SAVED AT SANDOWN - 3/5/2007
Work to improve the treatment process at Sandown Water Supply Works will save 900,000 litres of water per day - that’s enough to fill half an Olympic-sized swimming pool or 9,000 baths.
The Southern Water works, in Golf Links Road, Sandown, takes its water main supply from the River Yar.
Before it becomes drinkable the water goes through a treatment process. This produces a thin sludge which, at present, goes into the sewers.
Special equipment to recover more than 90 per cent of the water in the sludge is now being installed. It will be recycled to eventually become drinking water.
Water Supply Section Leader for Southern Water Des Eastman said: “As an island, water resources need to be managed very carefully on the Isle of Wight. Investing in schemes such as this is vital to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our customers and the thousands of visitors to the island every year.”
The work is part of a £7million improvement project at Sandown and should be complete by summer 2008.
It will be carried out by Southern Water contractors 4Delivery, which is carrying out £750 million worth of environmental improvement and water quality schemes for Southern Water across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight between 2005 and 2010.
