RAMSGATE’S FIRST SEA GARDEN LAUNCHED - 12/6/2008

A piece of wasteland in Ramsgate has been transformed into a beautiful garden, thanks to volunteers and businesses, including Southern Water.
Ramsgate Sea Garden can be found along Ramsgate’s Eastcliff at the north end of the lower promenade car park
It was the work of the Thanet Coast Project, in partnership with Southern Water and Thanet District Council, with help from volunteers including local residents and Ramsgate artist Ruth Cutler.
The garden was designed using drought and coastal tolerant plants and it will also be a suitable habitat for wild plants to grow.
It was officially opened by MP for South Thanet Dr Stephen Ladyman said: “It's great to see the Ramsgate community working together to make this wonderful improvement to the seafront. I am sure the sea garden will be enjoyed by many in the future.”
Thanet Coast Project Manager Tony Child said: “The garden has completely transformed this former area of wasteland, much to the benefit of local people and visitors. This plot of land is one that does suffer from harsh conditions, with wind and salt from the sea, so converting it into a sea garden was quite a challenge. We’d like to thank Thanet District Council and Southern Water for their support in this project.”
Southern Water Public Affairs Manager Andy Shaddick said: “We’re delighted to be able to support this project which highlights the variety of coastal plants that can be used in gardens that are drought resistant. The finished result is superb.
“Although we are not currently in a drought, we always ask our customers to be waterwise at home and in their garden.”
