Water resources latest

In this section we explain the current status of our water resources and how our reservoirs compare to the long term average and minimum levels.

Our four above-ground reservoirs are either full or nearly full, ready for the increase in demand expected during the summer.

At about double what they were this time last year, levels of our reservoirs are well above average – as are the underground sources which provide 70 per cent of our water supply. This follows the wettest year on record in England.

Where our water comes from

Autumn and winter are important seasons for us as that is when our reservoirs and underground sources are refilled in time for the higher demands of Spring and Summer.

We're continuing our work to reduce leakage across our region to an all-time low and to replace 256km of water mains to help reduce the risk of bursts.

Around 250,000 water meters equipped with leak alarms have also been installed across the South East – which will help save up to five million litres of water each day.

We're currently updating our 25-year plan for securing water supplies in the South East and are including plans to make the water supply for customers more resilient to changing weather patterns in the future.

The Water Resources Management Plan is updated every five years and will be published for public consultation between May and July this year.
