2011 CSO notification trial

Southern Water has voluntarily taken part in a combined sewer overflow (CSO) notification trial for the 2011 bathing season.

The aim of the trial, which began on May 15 and lasted until the end of the season in September, was to notify beach managers in as close to real time as possible of any storm spills from nearby CSOs. It was focused in our region on the 10 beaches which have been awarded Blue Flags (see list below).

If the trial proves successful, we will look to extend the notifications to all of our designated bathing waters for the 2012 or 2013 bathing season.

We will be working with Defra, local authority beach managers, Surfers Against Sewage and the Environment Agency.
