There are seven Approved Contractors' Schemes operating across the UK. All of these schemes are authorised as Approved Contractors' Schemes by the local water company or the Secretary of State under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.
We are one of a number of water supply companies who fund WIAPS – the Water Industry Approved Plumbers’ Scheme – which is free of charge to participating plumbers.
An approved plumber will certify that their installation or maintenance work satisfies the regulations
We support WIAPS whose members have demonstrated their experience of plumbing work and knowledge of the regulations and have appropriate liability insurance cover.
- If breaches of the regulations are found in the certified work, the legal responsibility falls upon the approved plumber and not the owner or occupier
- The installation by an approved contractor of certain specified items removes the requirement for prior consent but, on completion, copies of compliance certificates must be sent to the person who commissioned the work. In the case of an RPZ valve assembly, the contractor must also notify us.
In October 2013 the seven schemes came together under the banner of WaterSafe, an organisation owned by all seven Approved Contractors' Schemes as well as Water UK.
WaterSafe is a search facility bringing together contractors from the seven schemes, including:
- CIPHE (the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering)
- APHC (the Association of Heating and Plumbing Contractors).
Therefore they may have additional qualified plumbers near you.
