The competitive non-household market is now open.

If you are a non-household customer, you are now able to switch your water and wastewater retailer.

You can find more information about our role as a wholesaler and the role of retailers here.

If you are a household customer, these changes do not affect you.

Final bill

As from 1 April 2017, unless you have notified us otherwise, your Southern Water account and the services you received from us have been transferred to Business Stream. Business Stream are responsible for supplying these services.

If you are a Trade Effluent customer, you will receive your final Southern Water bill in April.

Your account

The competitive non-household retail market is now open.

From 1 April 2017, non-household customers are able to switch their water and wastewater retailer. 

The following services are now provided by your retailer:

  • Paying your bill
  • Setting up a direct debit
  • Setting up a new account
  • Changes to your account
  • Change of tenant
  • Submit a meter reading
  • Service requests


Please contact your retailer for further information. If you have not actively chosen to switch retailers, your retailer is Business Stream for the services you previously received from Southern Water. 

If your water or wastewater was previously supplied by a company other than Southern Water, these services won’t have  transferred to Business Stream. If you have a query about the services offered by your other providers please contact them directly.

  1. If you are a new non-household customer 
    • Southern Water no longer supplies water retail services for non-household customers

      New regulations introduced competition into the non-household retail water market in England from April 2017.

      This mean that non-household customers, including all businesses, public sector organisations and charities, are able to choose their provider of water and/or wastewater services. Southern Water has taken the decision not to be a retail services provider.

      What this means for you

      You need to choose a retailer

      Because Southern Water no longer manages any non-household customer accounts, you'll need to choose a company to provide your water, wastewater and/or trade effluent retail services. As part of the new regulations, we are unable to provide you with guidance or advise on which retailer to choose.

      Where to find information about retailers

      Further information about competition in the non-household retail market and what you need to do about choosing a retailer is available at www.open-water.org.uk. Southern Water is committed to working closely with all retailers to give customers the best wholesale water, wastewater and trade effluent services we can.

      Although we won't be providing your retail services, we'll continue to own, manage and maintain the water and waste water infrastructure for the area. This includes looking after our network of pipes, mains and treatment works that support your business.
