Every employee who joins Southern Water is placed in the designated band for their job. They can then progress through a structure of bands as they gain experience and skills.


We have an equitable and transparent pay structure with salaries progressing at fixed points as further skills and competency is acquired.

Personal development programme

Employees have an individual programme which is tailor-made to ensure they are receiving the training and support needed to carry out their job to the best of their ability.

The programme works towards promotion within the company and across different departments.

Annual appraisal

Each year employees have an annual appraisal and six-month review with the head of their department to identify training and development needs.


We provide extensive training to our staff, covering health and safety, training specific to the job and development and management training as required.

In-house training courses include first aid, working in confined spaces, manual handling and driving.

NVQ and City & Guild qualifications and professional qualifications are taught in regional colleges on a day-release basis.
