Over the past year alone, more than 12,000 customers have signed up to Southern Water’s Essential Tariff and are making savings of between 20-90 per cent on their water and wastewater bills.
As of April 2016, anyone receiving pension credits automatically qualifies for the tariff. However, customers may also be eligible if their water charges represent 3 per cent or more of their household income.
Claire Graham, Southern Water’s Collections Manager, said: “The South East is the most debt-burdened county in England. That’s why we’re working to improve the way we support our customers who are in financial hardship, and are making sure we let them know about the different tariffs we have available.
“The Essentials Tariff could, depending on individual circumstances, help customers save a maximum of 90 per cent of their water bill. We also offer an additional three support tariffs – more information about these can be found on our website or by calling 0800 027 0363.”
Southern Water is proactively contacting customers on pension credits to let them know they could be eligible.
Phone lines are open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.
Notes to editors
1. Southern Water introduced this tariff as part of the promise they made to customers in their 2015-2020 business plan, to improve the financial support they offer customers.
2. Our additional tariffs are:
Entitles customers to a reduction in their bill if they have a water meter and use a large amount of water, providing they satisfy certain criteria.
For customers claiming Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment Support Allowance or Pension Credit, Jobcentre Plus may consider paying SW directly out of their benefits.
If our customers are able to start paying what they owe for the current year by regular instalments, SW will match the payment for them by deducting it from their arrears.
