Sandy scheme will boost the environment

More than 150 tonnes of sand are benefiting the environment in a Surrey town as Southern Water completes a multi-million pound project.

The company invested £5.5 million to upgrade Oxted Wastewater Treatment Works in Warren Lane.

The scheme included installation of three sand filters – large tanks filled with sand through which wastewater passes. The filters provide an extra treatment stage by removing tiny waste particles from wastewater.

The upgrade will ensure treated wastewater recycled into the River Eden is cleaner than ever and continues to meet new standards set by the Environment Agency.

Southern Water Project Manager Jon Kenrick said: “The sand filters will give the wastewater an extra polish before it leaves the site, enhancing the treatment process without the use of extra chemicals.”

Construction was carried out by supplier 4Delivery.

While under construction, the scheme was praised by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, an independent organisation founded by the industry to improve its image.

Inspectors said the construction team showed “real commitment” to being considerate neighbours.
