Southern Water has not installed ‘smart’ water meters. These are typically fitted by energy companies and are optional.
We have installed 450,000 Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
These meters are not optional as water resources in the South East of England are under pressure and the region has been classified as an area of serious water stress by the Government.
In 2010, to help manage the situation, we introduced a universal metering programme as part of a 25-year plan to secure water resources for the future. These plans were approved by Ofwat and the Consumer Council for Water.
Before the metering programme began, we carried out a public consultation which showed 85 per cent of people agreed metering was a good idea. To date, 62 per cent of households are saving an average of £162 a year and using 16.5 per cent less water.
