Our essential improvements to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in The Strand, Ryde, were completed at the end of 2015.
The existing sewer which runs under The Strand is a combined sewer, which means it carries both household wastewater and rainwater. During heavy rain there is a risk of the sewer overflowing, causing internal flooding to properties.
To tackle the problem, we have installed larger sewer pipes and a new underground stormwater storage tank.
The tank can hold up to one million litres of water during heavy rain and release it back into the network for treatment after water levels have subsided. The tank is 21 metres deep.
We have almost completed the work in the nearby Memorial Gardens as per the new layout for the gardens provided by the Isle of Wight Council. The return of the gardens furniture and planting will be completed at the correct time of year to ensure these have the best change of establishing.
We apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused and would like to thank local residents and business for their patience during these essential works.
