We’re planning a £6 million upgrade of Windmill Hill Wastewater Treatment Works to help protect the local environment and ensure we can continue to meet the needs of our customers.
We’ve submitted our proposals to the planning team at East Sussex County Council and are now awaiting feedback. If our proposals are approved, we aim to have work underway in mid-2018.
We’ll be installing new process and treatment equipment so that water leaving the site is of the highest quality. This will ensure we meet strict new environmental standards and help protect the local area. We’ll also be installing a new back-up generator as part of the scheme.
As well as protecting the environment, this modernisation work will allow the site to cope with population growth and safeguard wastewater services into the future.
Treated water from the site runs into marshland at Pevensey Levels, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Our work will help protect this important landscape and create a healthier environment for flora and fauna to grow.
We’ll be contacting customers before we start on site to provide more details about how we’ll complete these improvements.
We’ve proposed to limit working times to between 7.30am and 6pm on weekdays, with no weekend working. We’ll let you know if we’ll be doing anything outside of these hours.
During construction, lorries and other vehicles will gain access via Gardiner Street onto Victoria Road from the north of site. We’re working closely with East Sussex County Council to put measures in place so local roads can cope with increased traffic while we’re carrying out these essential improvements.
Our traffic management plan, submitted as part of the planning application, outlines in more detail how we’ll deal with traffic movements during construction. This includes arranging deliveries outside of the peak times of 8.30am – 9.30am and 3pm – 4pm. We’ll be providing further information to local residents before we start any work.
We’re awaiting feedback from East Sussex County Council about our plans. Once these have been finalised, we’ll begin work and aim to have the scheme completed by early 2020.
Keeping our customers updated
We’ll be writing to customers, Herstmonceux Parish Council, and local councillors to keep them informed about these improvements. We’re also planning a customer drop-in session and we’ll be getting in touch with customers with details about this.
