An aerial view of Margate Beach

Margate, Kent

We're working with local communities in Margate, Kent to make the area more resilient to bad weather and reduce the use of storm overflows.

background

The challenge

The catchment of Margate in Kent has a significant combined sewer system, which gets overwhelmed with water during heavy rainfall.

This results in storm overflow releases to prevent widespread flooding. It can also put pressure on our assets, lead to pumping failures and further releases of wastewater in local coastal waters. This can and has previously resulted in beach closures.

This project is still in the early stages but our work will seek to understand the source of all the water in entering our sewer system from the surrounding area. This will help us introduce solutions that remove enough water to reduce pressure on pumping stations and storm overflows. In doing this, we aim to reduce storm releases.

What we're doing

1

Working with local schools

We're working with 14 schools in Margate to install rain garden planters and sustainable drainage features. These will help to reduce the amount of surface water getting into the sewer network.

2

Improving our pumping stations

We're investing in our Margate and Broadstairs water pumping stations to upgrade our pumps and make them more resilient. This will help them deal with excess rainwater during periods of bad weather.

3

Sustainable drainage systems

We're also working to overcome the challenges of surface water in Margate using sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). We're working with Kent County Council at Gloucester Avenue to deliver a SuDS park that slows the flow of surface water into the combined network.

4

Managing large roofs

Buildings with large roof areas, such as schools and offices, can create a lot of surface water run-off. We're working with property owners to install drainage solutions or direct the water away from the combined system.
