Water mains affecting development

Where there are water mains affecting your planned development, you may need to divert or change them. Or, you may want to look at removing an abandoned section of pipe. We can assess your proposal and comment on the design options through a water main diversion. We can also provide a water main diversion quote.

Unlike a sewer main diversion, we don't allow the option for developers to carry out this work on our behalf. This is due to the risks associated with water quality and maintaining supply to our customers.

Step-by-step guide to the water main diversion applications process

Below is our guide on what you need to do when making a water main diversion application. We often refer to a diversion as a ‘Section 185’. We'll keep in touch along the way to make sure everything goes smoothly.

1

Apply for a water main diversion online

Fill in the online form via GetConnected and pay the application fee. We’ll respond within five days to let you know that the documentation is complete or if we need any more information.
2

We provide your quote

We'll carry out a site survey and produce a water main diversion quote for your project within 28 days. If the design is complex, we'll be in touch to let you know of the revised timescale for delivery.
3

Sign in and pay

You review the quote, sign and pay for construction works to proceed. When we receive payment, we'll assign a Project Manager who will be in contact within 10 days.
4

Pre-start meeting

We’ll arrange a meeting to confirm the start date and schedule for the work. This will be held at your development site.
5

We'll complete the water main diversion works

Once we confirm the dates, we'll schedule our work and begin the diversion within 90 days. If there are any onsite changes that will affect the schedule, please let us know as soon as possible.
6

Complete your works

We’ll issue conditional approval for your construction works. Please share it with your contractors. Once completed, we'll arrange a final site inspection.
7

We complete the final inspection

After the work is finished, we'll carry out the final inspection and complete the connection.
