Your sewers are getting an £18 million upgrade

We’re working hard to replace ageing sewers to prevent flooding in your homes and protect the environment

background

Why does this work need to be done?

The sewers beneath your streets are more than 100 years’ old and some of them are more than 10m underground in chalk tunnels.

What we’ll be doing

  • We’re replacing 100 manhole covers. Most of these will be replaced at night to cause minimal disruption to traffic. We’ll be working from 9pm til 4am.
  • Internally relining 225 sewers via manhole covers. Traffic management with lights and/or road closures may be required depending on location. We’ll be working seven days a week from 8am to 5pm.
  • Excavating to repair 20 sewers. Traffic management with lights and/or road closures may be required depending on location. We’ll be working seven days a week from 8am to 5pm.
  • Possible sewer up-sizing works.

How we’ll be doing it

We’re using mining experts to access these ageing chalk tunnels because they’re so deep underground. Accessing them through existing manholes, we’ll be using state-of-the-art CCTV surveys and the latest technology to reduce noise and disruption while we carry out the work.

Keeping you happy while we carry out this work is a priority for us so we’ll be working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Keeping you informed

We’ll always contact you before we start any work, if you’ll be directly affected.

We don’t have any plans to turn your water off while we’re completing this work, but if we find that we need to, we’ll always contact you in advance.

Roads and traffic

We might need to use some temporary lights or close a road while we access some of the sewers, but we’ll try and keep any disruption to a minimum. Diversions will be well marked. Most of this work will happen outside of the summer season, to reduce any impact on local businesses and roads.

Our working hours:

Monday to Friday:
from 8am to 6pm

Saturdays:
from 8am to 4.30pm

Sundays:
from 9am to 4pm.

Again, if we need to complete any work outside of these hours, we’ll be in touch in advance.

How long will we be here?

The project will run from mid-January 2023 for two and a half years as we carry out surveys and improvement work to the sewers in Margate, Birchington, Westbrook and Cliftonville.
