Sewer adoption

Want us to adopt your sewer or pumping station? We can take over new or existing pipes and stations and bring them into our public sewer network, if they meet our standards. Here, we’ll guide you through the process of applying for a sewer adoption (Section 104).

background

Codes for sewer adoption

The Codes for Adoption were introduced on 1 April 2020. This means applications covering the adoption of newly constructed sewers and pumping stations must meet Water UK’s Sewer Sector Guidance. This replaced the ‘Sewers for Adoption’ guidance.

How to apply for a sewer adoption

Below you can find several guides and application forms — please read them before you get started. We'll be in touch every step of the way to make sure everything runs smoothly.

1

Pre-design strategic assessment

For large or complex sites, you may need a pre-design assessment for your plans before submitting your sewer adoption application. Please read our wastewater pre-design strategic assessment guide before completing the pre-design application form.

2

Apply online

Fill in our online form via the GetConnected portal and submit your design along with the application fee. We’ll review your application within five days.

3

We'll assess and approve

Our engineers will complete a technical assessment within 28 days. Once you've received our approval, you can request an early start meeting. We'll arrange this within seven days, and once the inspection is completed, construction can begin.

4

Sign the adoption agreement

You'll need to enter into an adoption agreement and pay a fee so we can formally adopt the sewers. We understand work may need to begin before the agreement has been signed by everyone involved. In this case, you can complete an early start request to avoid delays.

5

Pre-start meeting

If you haven’t requested an early start meeting, you should now request a pre-start meeting with one of our wastewater assistant adoption managers. We'll be in touch within 14 days, and your construction can start once the inspection is complete.

6

Construct your new sewer

After you begin construction, we'll carry out inspections to make sure the sewer complies with the adoption agreement. We’ll then carry out a sewer adoption maintenance inspection once the work is complete. We'll provide you with a provisional certificate to enter into a 12-month maintenance period.

7

Final inspection and vesting

Three months before the end of your maintenance period, you’ll need to request a final inspection. At this point, we will ask for As-Built drawings in both DWG & PDF formats, together with a completed As-Built Data sheet (available below). Once approved, we’ll issue a certificate of completion, and the legal vesting of the sewers will follow. Once we have all the documents needed, your security bond will be released, if applicable.

Your questions answered...

If anything changes after we've granted technical acceptance, please contact the team.

We’ll discuss any minor changes with you — they may be able to be recorded on the ‘As Built’ drawings. Major changes will need to be re-submitted for formal approval.

Yes, all pumping station designs must meet our mechanical and electrical technical specifications. Please read our Technical Specifications Manual (MED 4006), which adds extra detail to Water UK’s Code for Adoption (Sewerage Sector Guidance, Appendix C – Design and Construction Guidance).

This guide explains the essential standards for designing and building pumping stations, including mechanical and electrical requirements. Please read it alongside the Design and Construction Guidance (DCG) and our other standards. Meeting these specifications is vital for adoption approval.

Under Section 102 of the Water Industry Act 1991, the owner of an existing private sewer can apply to transfer ownership of their sewer to us. All the information you need is in our guidance notes for adopting existing sewers. If you’d like to adopt an existing sewer, you can apply through our GetConnected portal.

Section 7 of the sector guidance sets out the process for redress — where our service hasn’t met our standards. If this happens, please read our redress document to understand our levels of service and how we can put things right if we don’t meet them.
