Self-lay providers

If you need new water mains, we can lay them for you, or you can use a self-lay provider (SLP). We’ll then adopt the new pipes as long as they meet our standards. If you’re a SLP, learn how you can apply to lay a new water main (Section S51) here.

Choosing a self-lay provider

Choosing a self-lay provider can save time and money. When choosing a self-lay provider, it’s important they’re accredited. All self-lay providers must be approved under the Water Industry Registration Scheme (WIRS). This guarantees work meets national standards. You can find WIRS-accredited providers and more details about self-lay schemes on the Lloyd’s Register website

How to apply to lay a new water main

Below you can find several forms and guides to help you with your application. We'll be in touch every step of the way to make sure everything runs smoothly. Before you apply, you’ll need: 

  • a site location plan highlighting the boundary, surround roads, topography and your. preferred point of connection to our network
  • an AutoCAD drawing of the proposed development in a DWG format
  • a site plan showing all utilities, entry point, service margins and permeable paving
  • a geo-environmental site investigation report
  • a contaminated land assessment form
  • written consent from the landowner to show approval for the project. 

Your design and work must meet the requirements of our Design and Construction Specification (DCS).

Apply online

Log in to our GetConnected portal and select ‘Lay a new main’. Complete all the details including whether you’d like us to do the design and make your payment. We’ll review your application within five days.

Point of connection report

We’ll email you when your Point of Connection report is ready and upload it to your GetConnected dashboard within 14 days, or 28 days if your site is complex.

Submit your design

Once you’ve confirmed the point of connection, you can submit your mains design or ask us to design it for you and pay the relevant fee.

Design acceptance and payment

We’ll assess your design and respond within 14 days. Once accepted, we’ll send you a form to sign and ask you to pay any non-contestable costs and outstanding payments before moving forward.

Sign the adoption agreement

All parties must sign and return the adoption agreement to selflay@southernwater.co.uk. This confirms when the water source connection will be made. We’ll sign and send you a copy too.

Construct the new main

We’ll arrange a pre-start meeting to go through next steps and required documents. During construction, you’ll need to upload a weekly ‘whereabouts form’ to keep us updated.

Apply for service connections

Within the GetConnected portal, tell us how you want to make service connections and what meters you need.

Declaration of vesting

Once everything is complete and documents checked, we’ll send your Declaration of Vesting certificate via GetConnected.
