Guidance, regulations and standards
In this section, you can access helpful resources for our building and developing services.
These are requirements for design, installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances in domestic and commercial properties in England and Wales.
Anyone installing new water fittings must ensure that they are of the appropriate quality and are properly installed.
Complying with these regulations ensures that our drinking water won't become contaminated with water designed for other purposes such as central heating, washing machines, and industrial processes.
Plumbing systems must be designed, installed and maintained to meet the Regulations’ requirements.
Plumbing materials and fittings must be of a suitable standard and not able to cause waste, misuse, undue consumption or contamination of the water supply. Although it isn't illegal to sell unsuitable fittings and appliances, it is illegal to install them.
Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) valves are devices that protect against backflow. This protects against the contamination of mains water supply.
Where a non-approved contractor is to install an RPZ valve assembly, you must notify us in advance. You can do this by completing an application form and providing a plan of the proposed installation.
