£1.4m mains replacement underway to cut bursts in Sussex village
A project to future-proof water mains in Fairlight Village has kicked off.
Improving water resilience in Fairlight Village
We are replacing around 5km of ageing pipework with modern plastic pipes to cut bursts and risk of interruption to supply.
The first phase of the eight-month project has just begun in Fyrsway, Broadway and Rockmead Road, with work between Waites and Lower Waites Lane due to begin in May.
We are using a technique called directional drilling to tunnel beneath the streets instead of digging a trench to minimise disruption to residents.

Project Manager George Liddell said: “The start of our mains replacement project marks a milestone in our work to tackle bursts in Fairlight village. Upgrading these aging pipes is an important step towards future-proofing the network. "We are grateful to customers for their support and patience while we work to complete the project as quickly and efficiently as possible. We will continue to provide updates on progress." We are holding regular drop-ins to keep residents updated on the scheme, as well as working with local councillors and other stakeholders. Replacing aging mains is part of Southern Water’s annual £100 million investment to reduce leakage across the region by fixing leaks faster, managing pressure across the network and upgrading water meters. |
