Eastern Road Phase 3

Re-lining of more than 600 metres of sewer pipe.

Eastern Road Phase 3 is the re-lining of more than 600 metres of underground sewer pipe that is located under the path and verge. This project will cost nearly £900k. Phase 3 is scheduled to start on from 7pm on 12 May 2024 and is expected to last around 4 weeks.

The Phase 3 re-lining work requires a one lane closure southbound on the Eastern Road from south of the bridge on Eastern Road, to the opposite of the Volkswagen showroom. The cycle and walking path will be closed on the east side of Eastern Road, from the roundabout to Airport Service Road.

On the 5 June the lane closure will be removed to support the commemorations of D-Day 80 taking place in Portsmouth. The cycle and footpath will remain closed and work will be paused at this time to ensure the safety of people travelling through the area.

Diversions will be in place for people walking and cycling. Temporary pedestrian traffic lights will be installed at the Airport Service Road junction so that people can cross the Eastern Road and Airport Service Road safely ahead of the path closure. People walking can then continue north on the footpath on the west side of Eastern Road.

A signed cycle diversion will be in place for the safest cycle route via Airport Service Road, Robinson Way and Anchorage Road and vice versa for traveling south. The public footpaths on the east side of Eastern Road either side of the bridge will also be closed. Access to Kendalls group, Tudor sailing club and Andrew Simpsons centre will be unaffected by the repair works.

Relining the sewer pipes aims to stop recurring issues with the underground pipe, which have led to temporary road closures in the past. This re-lining approach takes a shorter timeframe than a normal repair, requiring less digging and is less disruptive to commuters. Lining material is fed through the stretch of pipe underground, heated and then the pipe is sealed.

Phase 3 will connect to the section already relined in previous work phases and fix the recent burst. Once complete over 1,000 metres of sewer pipe will have been relined from Farlington roundabout to beyond Anchorage Road.

We are working closely with the Highways Authority, Portsmouth City Council, and their partner that manages the network, Colas, to minimise the impact on road users wherever possible.

Alex Saunders, head of wastewater networks said: “We have brought forward Phase 3 because of the recent burst sewer incident. We apologise for the further disruption this will cause residents, businesses and commuters. We will continue to update our website with any further information.”
