New storm overflow reduction scheme for Kent

We have launched a major new storm overflow reduction scheme in Kent – focusing on the communities of Tunbridge Wells, Bidborough and Tonbridge.

This initiative builds on significant work already underway across the county, including projects in Herne Bay, Whitstable, Queenborough, Faversham, and Sittingbourne.

This scheme forms part of Southern Water’s £1.5 billion plan to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality across the region.

Our teams are currently investigating the local network to identify the most effective solutions. These could include nature-based interventions, storage options, and innovative engineering approaches similar to the ones in  Queenborough and Whitstable. Further details will be shared once investigations are complete.

The work will help create healthier rivers and seas, including the River Teise, which flows through Tunbridge Wells and joins the River Medway, benefiting local communities and wildlife.

Angus Cramp- Programme Delivery Lead East, Clean Rivers and Seas Task Force, said:

“Reducing storm overflows is vital for protecting our waterways and coastal environments. This new schemes in Tunbridge Wells, Bidborough and Tunbridge demonstrates Southern Water’s commitment to safeguarding rivers in this area and improve the environment for our customers and wildlife.”

“We’re in the early stages where our engineers are looking at our network to see where we can find ways to optimise what we have, put in nature-based solutions like sustainable drainage and other ways we can slow the flow of water entering the combined sewer.”
