About Bewl Water
Bewl Water Reservoir
Situated near Lamberhurst, Bewl Water Reservoir is the largest stretch of open water in South East England. Its surface area is the same size as 436 Wembley football pitches.
The reservoir is a key source of drinking water for East Sussex and Kent. It has a capacity of more than 31,000 million litres of water – enough to provide an average day’s water usage (about 150 litres) to nearly 200 million people.
Bewl Water has recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The project began in 1973 and took two years to complete, costing £11 million.
Our investment
We’re spending over £40 million on a water reservoir upgrade project at Bewl. This will keep the reservoir safe and protect against the effects of climate change.
The project will allow us to reduce the reservoir water level more quickly. There are many reasons why we might need to do this. For example, to reduce high reservoir levels during exceptionally high rainfall or carry out repair works to the dam.
Reservoir users and walkers/cyclists will continue to have access to the water and the footpath near to our working area. We expect to have the upgrades fully completed by the end of 2026.
