Amsterdam Way to Cinque Ports Way improvements

Wastewater flows are now going through the newly lined sections of sewer and an overland pipe. The section of pipe that bursts is no longer in use.

We began work on the Cinque Ports Way rising main in Summer 2023 to resolve the problem of recurring bursts. Last month (February 2024), we completed the transition from the old main to the new pipeline route. Thank you for your patience while we completed this work which required us to turn off the pumping station and use 56 tankers.

We can now safely work on the remaining section in the industrial estate where the old and new pipe are very close together. This is a significant achievement as we move towards the end of this £8 million scheme.

We aim to complete our work by Spring 2024, some reinstatement work has already begun with other areas to be completed by September 2024.

12 February 2024 Update

As you are aware, we have been carrying out planned work concerning the Cinque Ports rising main sewer that has involved turning off the Cinque Ports Wastewater Pumping Station since Tuesday. This has needed around 56 tankers to be in the area while we take wastewater to other sites.

We have now permanently diverted the wastewater flows from the old sewer into the new partially completed pipeline route. This is a major milestone as we move towards the end of this £8 million scheme to address the issues that local residents have experienced in recent years with recurring bursts.

Our tankering activity is now complete and we expect to have all equipment that was used for the 3 day planned shut removed from the area by the end of next week.

We’re planning a three day shutdown of Cinque Ports Pumping Station
From Tuesday 6 February for 3 days, there will be 56 tankers in Hastings. This is a planned shut down of the pumping station.

We are turning off Cinque Ports Pumping Station for three days which means we’ll need to tanker the wastewater to Hastings Treatment Works. This planned work will require approximately 56 tankers which is a similar number to when there has been a burst.

We understand this is an inconvenience for residents and visitors to the area but after reviewing the methodology, this is the best strategy to get the work done safely and quickly for everyone.

How will this impact me?

Traffic management

• Bulverhythe Car Park, Bexhill Road

We’ll be using stop and go boards to control tankers manoeuvring in and out of the car park.

• Cinque Ports Way

We’ll have people to manage the traffic for three days to control tankers pulling out of Cinque Ports Way onto the A259. There will be no need for temporary traffic lights, as agreed by East Sussex Highways.

Tankers

You will see tankers in our working areas which are Seaside Road, along Cinque Ports Way and the Bulverhythe car park. You will notice extra vehicle movements in and around the local area.

Noise

We will be using generators, plant and machinery during the work, and will minimise any inconvenience to local residents where possible.

Car parks

There will be no car parking available at Bulverhythe car park during the three day planned works.

Cinque Ports Way car park will be access only for residents.

Lighting

For all night works we will need to use flood lights to make sure the works can be carried out safely. We aim to position the lighting in a way that will minimise inconvenience.

Tankers in Hastings

We are planning a short shutdown of Cinque Ports pumping station. The work will start between Tuesday 30 January and Tuesday 20 February 2024. It will only last three days.

Everything is ready to do the work, but we can’t start until we have 50 tankers available. They are needed to take the wastewater from Cinque Ports pumping station to Bexhill & Hastings Wastewater Treatment Works.

We’re currently using a significant number of tankers to prevent flooding in other parts of the Region, by taking groundwater out the network. The unprecedented groundwater levels are the highest they have been in 10 years.

The shutdown is needed to enable us to carry out the next phase of the sewer relining project. We will continue to work on other aspects of the project, in order to minimise any delay to the programme.

Once we have a confirmed date, we will use a multi-channel approach to update customers so that everyone is aware of the tankers and can plan their journeys accordingly.

We’ve now completed 70% of the new route, up from 40% last month.

We’re continuing to work on the pipe, carrying out all the relevant testing and connections.

We would like to thank you for your patience whilst we plan this essential work.

We’re sorry for the distress and inconvenience from when the sewer burst a couple of weeks ago. The capital scheme is being delivered as quickly as possible to get the sewage flows permanently out of that weak pipe and into a new pipeline. This work started in the Summer and carried on throughout the incident.

We’ve now completed 40% of the new route, up from 25% last month. The contractor is working extended hours, weekends and in multiple locations to keep up the pace.

Arnside Road

We’ve started work here on Monday 30 October, ready for the lining work to take place on Monday 13 November 2023.
We plan to have the pit backfilled and reinstated before Christmas.

Cliftonville Way

Cliftonville Road is now open from the junction with Cliftonville Way and where it meets Arnside Road.

Cinque Ports Way (Bulverhythe beach)

We’ve started on the cross connection between the existing pumping station and the new pipe route.
We expect to be finished in this area by December 2023.

Bridge Way

Our main work in Bridge Way is completed but there maybe some vehicle movements in and around the area.
We expect to be finished in this area by Summer 2024.

Bulverhythe Car Park, Bexhill Road

We’ve fenced off a section of the car park so that we can safely access a manhole to connect the temporary overland pipe back into the sewage network.

We expect to be finished in this area by the end of Summer 2024.

We’re repairing 1.3 km of sewer and have already repaired a quarter of the pipeline.

We’re working in several locations at once and using a number of different techniques.

This is a complicated project where we will be working in several locations at once.

The red and green line on the map indicates where we will repair a redundant sewage pipe by relining it.

The blue line shows where we will need to excavate a trench and lay a new pipe.

What happens next?

Arnside Road
During the week starting 18 September 2023, we’ll be excavating a 15 metre long x 5 metre wide pit in Arnside Road at the junction with Cliftonville Road.

You may notice extra construction traffic in and around the local area. This is because we’re also working in Cliftonville Road where the blue line is on the map.

We expect to be finished in this area by the middle of October 2023.

Cliftonville Way

To keep everyone safe, Cliftonville Road will be closed from the junction with Cliftonville Way and where it meets Arnside Road.

We expect to be finished in this area by the end of October 2023.

Cinque Ports Way (Bultherhythe beach)

We’re starting the repair work in this area from late September, access will be restricted for vehicles along Cinque Ports Way to the Scout Hut. The bollards will be temporarily removed between Huts 111E and 111C to allow you to drive to the back row of huts. When we’re finished, we’ll replace the bollards and make good any damage to the ground.

We expect to be finished in this area by December 2023.

Bridge Way
We’re installing a temporary overland pipe that will take the sewage to the treatment works, whilst we repair the main sewer pipes underground. The overland pipe will be removed and the area will be reinstated at the end of the work.

Our main working area will be by the bridge, on Bridge Way, but you may notice extra construction traffic in and around the local area.

We expect to be finished in this area by the end of Summer 2024.

Bulverhythe Car Park, Bexhill Road

We have fenced off a section of the car park so that we can safely access a manhole to connect the temporary overland pipe back into the sewage network.
