Testing for a leak

Do you have a leak on your water supply? Here we give you a number of steps to check if you have a leak.

You will need to locate your meter. This is usually outside your property.

  1. Make sure your appliances, for example washing machine or dishwasher, are not being used and ensure that toilet cisterns and water tanks are not being filled up.

  2. Wait for about 15 minutes.

  3. If the meter dial is moving, then it’s possible that there is a leak somewhere on the supply.

To determine where the leak is – the stop tap test.

  1. Turn off the internal stop tap and ensure that it has been turned off by running a kitchen tap.

  2. If the red hand on the meter dial is still moving, then it’s possible that there is a leak on the supply pipe between the meter and the internal stop tap.

  3. If the red hand is stationary, then it’s possible that there is a fault on the internal pipe work and/or fittings.
