Hosepipe ban exemptions

If you are a blue badge holder, on our Priority Services Register, or our WaterSure tariff for medical reasons, you will automatically be exempt.

Am I exempt from hosepipe restrictions?

Customers on our Priority Services Register with medical or mobility needs, including Blue Badge holders and those on our WaterSure tariff, are exempt. Anything you can do to reduce or avoid hosepipe use would be greatly appreciated.

If the below list of exemptions don’t apply to you but you think you should be included, please apply for an exemption using this form.

 

Customers with additional needs

  • This includes Blue Badge holders and customers who are on our Priority Services Register for medical or mobility reasons

Watering a garden using a hosepipe

  • For health or safety reasons (e.g. sports pitches' active playing areas)

Cleaning a private motor-vehicle using a hosepipe

  • If it's a public service or goods vehicle

Watering plants on domestic/non-commercial premises

  • If plants are grown for sale, part of a National Plant Collection, or temporary garden/flower display
  • Cleaning a private leisure boat using a hosepipe
    Enclosed areas of the boat
  • For health or safety reasons

Filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool:

  • During construction
  • Using a handheld container
  • For medical or veterinary treatment
  • For decontaminating animals
  • If used to keep aquatic animals
  • Filling or maintaining a domestic pond using a hosepipe
  • If used to keep aquatic animals

Filling or maintaining an ornamental fountain

  • If it oxygenates a fishpond

Cleaning walls/windows, paths, patios, or artificial outdoor surfaces using a hosepipe

  • For health or safety reasons

Watering food crops

  • At domestic premises or private allotments, if not feasible by watering can

Watering new turf

  • For up to 4 weeks after laying
  • Watering new trees, saplings, whips, hedging
  • Planted within 3 years of the Temporary Use Ban start date

Watering standard urban trees

  • A hosepipe can be used for watering trees, whips, saplings and hedging planted before the ban, in the last three years, where this cannot be reasonably done by way of a watering can.

Drip or trickle irrigation systems

  • Must be fitted with pressure-reducing valve and timer
  • Must not be handheld
  • Must apply water directly to soil without runoff or misting

Apply for a temporary use ban (TUB) exemption

This can be found in the top right corner of your bill and is 8 or 10 digits long.
