£8.2 million investment at Kent treatment site
Our Rainham Wastewater Treatment Works is receiving a £8.2 million boost to improve its storm storage capacity at the site.
Motney Hill Wastewater Treatment Works is benefiting from upgrades which will increase its storm storage capacity to more than double, to 10,000 m3 from 4,489 m3.
The civil engineering build will see a new storm tank installed on site, which will be 1 metre above ground and 8 metres underground. The engineering work will also include new pumps and pipework for the new tank to store additional primary settled effluent.
The treatment site serves more than 100,000 households and the improvements will get underway in June 2025 and are scheduled to be complete in March 2026.
Oliver Stapley, Project Manager for Southern Water, said:
“Modernising infrastructure in this way will help improve our environmental performance and improve water quality in the future. We’re pleased to see the start of this project and are keen to continue investing in our treatment works across the South East.”
