A school is now saving more than 11,000 litres of water a day – enough to fill a swimming pool - after a free visit from Southern Water.
Park Gate Primary School in Northmore Road, Southampton is one of the latest places to benefit from our free water-saving visits, which in the past six months have helped organisations and businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight save more than a million litres of water each day.
Park Gate’s site manager Shona Montgomery said: “We were shocked that nine leaks were discovered on our school premises and that by fitting 18 water-saving devices we could save up to 5,025 litres of water per day! In total, with the new device and our leaks repaired we could be saving up to 11,040 litres of water a day, which is a huge amount.
“We can't wait to hear more about saving water from Southern Water during a whole school assembly and are really pleased that we have found a way to help the environment and save our school money.”
The visits – including leak repairs and water-saving device installation – are free of charge and are open to any school, university or business Southern Water supplies in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. In the past six months we’ve carried out more than 400 visits, fixed nearly 600 leaks and installed more than 6,000 water-saving devices, saving almost a million litres of water a day.
We have also been working hard to keep cutting leakage across our own network - with an 18.5% reduction last year.
Kayleigh Sharman, Southern Water's Water Efficiency Manager, said:
“Due to climate change and population growth, it’s estimated that the UK is going to need an extra 1.1 billion litres of water a day just to keep up with demand - so every drop counts.
The results from our water-saving visits show that even small changes can make a huge difference, helping protect future water supplies, and the environment, for years to come.”
