Long-term water supply plan finalised

We’ve published our Final Draft Water Resources Management Plan, which sets out how we will provide secure and reliable water supplies for the future.

This crucial document – also known as our Final Draft WRMP24 – went live on Friday 30 May 2025, at the same time as it was sent to government for approval by the Secretary of State.

Fresh from the driest spring since 1852, and with water companies closely monitoring the health of their water resources, it’s more important than ever that we all use water wisely.

The Environment Agency has identified that by 2050, almost 5 billion extra litres of water a day will be required to maintain public water supplies in England. More than half that need is in the South East – as we look to protect our environment in the face of reductions in abstractions, climate change and population growth.

Our Final Draft WRMP24 outlines a number of projects we’re developing to maintain water supplies across our region, including:

  • Reducing leakage - we cut leaks by around 18% last year and are working hard to continue at that rate
  • Improving water efficiency among our customers, businesses and communities
  • Developing new sources of water, such as water recycling, reservoirs, and transferring water from other areas of the UK.

Ben Ring, our Major Projects Director, said:

“We are grateful to everyone who has helped us shape our plan as it’s been developed. We will be writing to all who gave feedback as part of the consultation directly – notifying them of the plan’s publication and where they can find the response to the query they raised.

“We hope our plan gives our communities confidence in how we will keep taps and rivers flowing for generations to come.”

We expect the final government-backed publication to come in Autumn 2025.
