Rugby Club Tackles Water Saving
A Gravesend rugby club’s water saving scheme is being topped up by a grant from our Business Partnership Fund.
£20k grant helps save thousands of litres of water
The Business Partnership Fund’s third round of awards has issued three grants totalling more than £50,000 to businesses across the region – supporting innovative and creative water saving ideas.
Gravesend Rugby Club will use their £20,000 towards installing a borehole and rainwater harvesting system to water 3 x rugby pitches and cricket square.
The club’s water saving project will provide additional water in times of shortage, plus using water saving devices on club toilets, taps and showers.
When the work is complete the water saved is estimated to be around 10,000 litres of water per day for the club and will also save money on water bills.
The project started in July 2025 and will be completed in September in time for the start of the new season. Work will also include a water filtration system and pipework to the pitches.
Mark Bruce, Chairman, Gravesend Rugby Club, said: “We need a sustainable water supply for Gravesend Rugby Club and capturing water to re-use is key. The rainwater harvesting will have a real impact on our water bills and the Southern Water Business Partnership has been a great support.”
Kayleigh Sharman, our Water Efficiency Manager, added: “Our Business Partnership Fund is a practical solution to saving water and in turn, means taking less water from the environment. We wish to promote water efficiency in our region wherever we can.
“As the region’s population grows and the amount of water available stays the same, we need to actively embrace new ideas to save water.”
