Tech helps hotel chain save 9.5m litres of water a year

Premier Inn guests in Sussex and Hampshire are helping the environment by using less water during stays.

Thanks to a grant from our Business Partnership Fund, the hotel group has installed gadgets including water-efficient showerheads and flow-restricted taps in six of its busiest hotels, saving more than 27,000 litres of water a day, or 9.5 million litres a year. That’s the equivalent of almost 120,000 baths.

The hotels that have received water efficiency upgrades so far are:

  • Southampton City Centre

  • Southampton Airport

  • Southampton Cumberland Place

  • Southampton West Quay

  • Gatwick Manor Royal

  • Gatwick Crawley East

The upgrades build on the hotel chain’s Force for Good program, which includes a target to reduce water consumption, with priority given to hotels in water-stressed areas.

We are also committed to helping customers reduce their water consumption. Due to climate change and population growth, it’s estimated that an extra 1.1 billion litres of water a day will be needed by 2040 just to keep up with demand.

Since it was set up in 2023 to help local businesses save water and reduce their bills our Business Partnership Fund has funded more than 20 projects in schools, garden centres, animal sanctuaries and leisure centres, saving an estimated total of 136,330 litres of water per day.  We have also been working hard to keep cutting leakage across our network -with an 18.5% reduction last year.

Kayleigh Sharman, Water Efficiency Manager, said: “Our work with Premier Inn is another win for water-saving. As this project demonstrates, even small changes can make a big difference. We’re proud to have been able to help save millions of litres of water through the projects we’ve funded and excited to receive more innovative grant applications.”

Ross Greenhalgh, Energy Manager at Whitbread, said: “We’re dedicated to reducing water consumption across Premier Inns by 20 per cent per guest within the next five years. The work we’ve been able to carry out in partnership with Southern Water brings us a step closer to our target. It’s great to help our guests to help the environment.”
