Improving bathing water quality around St Helens

What have we done?

We’ve completed the upgrade at St Helens Wastewater Treatment Works so that wastewater will be treated to an even higher standard before it’s returned to the environment. We’re now completing the final checks and expect to leave the area during spring 2026.

After installing a new humus (settling) tank, so that we can treat more wastewater at any one time, we introduced new equipment to add an extra layer of treatment and improve how we process wastewater from homes and businesses in the area. 

This will also improve the treatment of excess and diluted rainwater that flows into the site, further increasing the quality of water returning to the local environment and improving local bathing waters.
