Southern Water's Pollution Incident Reduction Plan

Our 2026 plan takes a detailed look at what caused pollutions in 2025 and shows how we’re continuing to take action to reduce incidents in 2026 and beyond.

background

An overview of the plan

The total number of sewerage pollution incidents in 2025 was slightly lower than the previous year.

There was a reduction in incidents from our wastewater pumping stations and foul sewers, however incidents from rising mains increased.

Most pollution incidents were caused by blockages in the sewer, due to things like fat, oil or grease and wet wipes. Serious incidents are more frequently caused by burst rising mains, and these are a focus in our plan.

The PIRP 2026 aims to convert insights into action by:

  • tackling the causes of serious pollution incidents by preventing blockages, replacing rising mains and tackling pressure issues in our rising mains
  • reducing total pollutions by improving our processes to detect and respond to pollutions quicker and better
  • working towards containing pollutions within four hours, to reduce the duration and impact of an incident.

What caused pollution incidents in 2025?

We use our understanding of the causes of pollution incidents, to focus on activities which make the most difference. Out of a total of 249 pollution incidents, most were caused by blockages (27%). Electrical issues were the reason for 16%, followed by bursts (14%) and mechanical problems (10%). Sewer flooding caused 6% of pollution incidents.

How you can help

We're leading the sector in self-reporting pollution. This means our staff are trained to spot pollution incidents no matter how small. However, we need eyes and ears everywhere. If you see something that you think might be a pollution incident to report, please get in touch on 0800 952 1001.

Together, we can protect and improve the environment.

Lawrence Gosden, Chief Executive Officer

'Reducing pollution incidents remains a critical mission for the whole company, as we all live and work in the environment we seek to protect. Our approach is transparent. We’re making improvements but we still have challenges to overcome and we’ll continue to do this working closely with the Environment Agency (EA).'
