Flow regulator being fitted

Saving water with our flow regulator trial

We’re trialling a new device called a flow regulator to stop water from being wasted and protect future supplies.

background

What’s the trial about?

The Southeast is one of the most water-stressed areas in the UK. According to the Environment Agency, the region needs to find an extra 2.6 billion litres of water a day by 2050 to maintain water supplies. That’s why we’re testing flow regulators — small devices that fit to your external water meter and help control water flow. They make sure the water coming out of your taps flows at a steady level, preventing unnecessary surges and waste, without affecting everyday use. It’s just one of the ways we’re tackling water scarcity across the region.

Frequently asked questions

Many homes receive water at flow rates much higher than needed. The extra water coming out of taps often ends up going straight down the drain. By managing flow more efficiently, we can save water, reduce pressure on our network, and help protect the environment. The trial will help us understand how much water can be saved and how you find the experience.

The device won’t change your water quality or pressure. You might notice a slight drop in flow if multiple taps or appliances are running at once (e.g. two showers and a washing machine), but it won’t affect your plumbing, heating or stored water systems. If you notice your water looks cloudy or contains bubbles after the device has been fitted — just run your taps for a few seconds and it should clear. This is caused by trapped air in your pipes and is usually harmless.

First we’ll take a meter reading and then return to fit the device. You don’t need to be home, and it should only take a few minutes. Once we’re done, we’ll leave you a calling card to confirm the device has been installed. You can continue to use your water as normal. We'll be in contact to ask for your feedback via a survey. We really value hearing your views, so please respond to let us know more about your experience.

The flow regulator simply fits between your water meter and supply pipe. It has a control valve that opens for water supplied below a specific flow rate and won't let any larger volumes of water pass through.

If you think the device is causing a problem, please contact us on 01903 272 235 between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. You can discuss any concerns with our project team and if required we’ll send one of our approved plumbers to check. In the unlikely event the problem is related to the device, we’ll fix it and cover the cost. We will not cover any third-party plumbing costs or problems unrelated to the device.

Yes. Just fill in the form on this page and we’ll be in touch to arrange removal.

We chose these areas because they have a mix of water pressures and property types — helping us learn more about how the device performs is different situations.

We’ve selected homes in Worthing and Findon to take part in a four-month trial. If your home is included:

  • We’ll install the device free of charge.
  • You won’t need to be at home — we’ll leave a card to let you know it’s been fitted.
  • The device won’t change your water quality or pressure — you shouldn’t notice it.
  • You may see a decrease in your bill as it will reduce the amount of water wasted.

Want to opt out or ask a question?

If you have a question about the trial or you’d prefer not to take part, please fill in this simple form. We’re here to help.
