Club set to save millions of litres of water thanks to new on-site reservoir
A Hampshire golf club’s new personal reservoir plan is being topped up by a grant from our Business Partnership Fund.
The Fund's third round of awards has issued three grants totalling more than £50,000 to businesses across the region – supporting innovative and creative water saving ideas.
Stoneham Golf Club will use their £20,000 towards a £1.7 million project to build a 33,000m3 reservoir.
The reservoir has the potential to save around 8 million litres of water per year for the club – used to keep the greens and fairways in tip top shape – and save money on water bills in the process.
The project started in January 2024 and is due to be completed by October 2026. The new reservoir, which is located next door to the course, utilises recycled building materials.
Matt Plested Course Manager, Stoneham Golf Club, said: “Sustainability is a key strategic objective for Stoneham Golf Club and water consumption is key part of this.
“We’ve been looking at several ways that we can reduce water usage and Southern Water have been great in supporting this. Water audits highlighted areas that we can improve upon and have a real impact.”
Other benefits of the reservoir include encouraging local wildlife, like bats, badgers and dormice.
Kayleigh Sharman, our Water Efficiency Manager, added: “As the region’s population grows and the amount of water available stays the same, we need to actively embrace new ideas to save water.
“Our Business Partnership Fund is a practical solution to saving water and in turn, means taking less water from the environment. We wish to promote water efficiency in our region wherever we can.”
