White Chalk Cliffs And Beach In Kingsgate Bay, Margate, East Kent

Investing in Kent

Our investment in Kent will keep taps flowing, cut pollution, and protect the local environment — making sure the region is ready for future population growth.

background

We're investing £1 billion in your community

We’re making improvements after hearing from local customers about what they want to see.

Over the next five years, we’re preparing for population growth and the development it brings. That means expanding and upgrading our network to make sure your water supply remains strong and reliable. We’re also increasing our capacity to treat more wastewater than ever before.

At the same time, we’re making major improvements to the health of local rivers and seas by treating wastewater to a higher standard, reducing storm overflow releases by installing sustainable drainage and sealing sewers, and working hard to prevent flooding and pollution.

Improving reliability

To reduce the risk of supply interruptions we’re upgrading our water supply works in Burham, investing £130 million. The upgrade will increase the amount of water the site can treat and makes sure that when we do have to carry out fixes on site, we don’t have to turn your taps off.

Protecting the environment

We’re protecting local rivers and seas, supporting the environment and natural habitats by improving water quality. We’re doing this by reducing storm overflow releases in Canterbury and Whitstable – investing over £100 million at Swalecliffe Wastewater Treatment Works. We’re also improving wastewater treatment at Preston and removing more nutrients from wastewater at Canterbury.

Supporting local farmers

In Medway, we’re supporting local farmers and generating renewable energy by improving the treatment of sludge (a byproduct from water treatment). An investment of £3 million will help us enhance and restore habitats in and along the River Beult, protecting local wildlife. This investment will also help us to reduce sewer bursts and pollutions.

Protecting local rivers

We’re removing more nutrients from treated wastewater before returning it to local rivers across the Weald of Kent, with an investment of £116 million at our local wastewater sites.

Reducing storm overflow releases

We’re investing over £15 million to reduce storm overflow releases by increasing the volume of wastewater we can treat at our sites. We’re also protecting local rivers by removing more phosphorous from the water we return to the environment at our Tunbridge Wells wastewater site.

Protecting drinking water quality

At Martin Gorse, Martin Mill and Sutton Water, we’re protecting the quality of drinking water by investing in chalk groundwater projects.

A more reliable water supply

To future-proof our network and reduce the risk of supply interruptions, we’re replacing approximately 32km of water mains across Kent.

Water supply improvements

We’re reducing the risk of supply interruptions by making the water supply works at Wingham, Luton, Northfleet and Sutton more resilient to changes in water quality, avoiding site shutdowns. We’re also installing new treatment technology to remove more microorganisms, to make sure we continue to provide customers with high-quality drinking water.
