Saving water with a rainwater harvesting system

Henfield Leisure Centre in Sussex is a registered charity that provides a wide range of affordable activities, such as fitness classes, padel and bowls for all ages and abilities.

The centre successfully applied to our first round of the Business Partnership Fund. We awarded them £45,000 to upgrade their washrooms and install a rainwater harvesting system to flush their toilets.

The project increased the centre’s water resilience by reducing their reliance on mains water, minimising environmental impact and lowering internal operating costs. Not only will the work save 730,000 litres of water a year, but it will help the charity save money on their utility bills.

By installing a rainwater harvesting system, rainfall is now captured from the leisure centre’s roof and the roof of the new padel tennis court. From the roofs, it’s then re-directed into a new below ground irrigation tank. Using modern technology, the water will be filtered and released from the tank when it is needed to flush the toilets in the newly refurbed washrooms. Henfield Leisure Centre are using a local contractor Perry’s Group to deliver this project.

Simon Thompson, Henfield Leisure, Centre Manager said:
"With the help and support of Southern Water we have not only made improvements to our facilities which all the local community will benefit from, but we have installed a rainwater harvesting system to help us save water. We are very proud to be one of the first business in the area to have this amazing water system. None of this would have been possible without the help of Southern Water, they have made a real positive impact on the leisure centre and the community – Thank you’."

Kayleigh Sharman, Southern Water, Water Efficiency Manager said:
"Water is one of our most precious resources. The Southern Water Business Partnership Fund is an innovative scheme aiming to promote water efficiency in our region and find new ways to save water. It has been a pleasure supporting Henfield Leisure centre to achieve their goal."
