How the farm became more sustainable

Longdown Activity Farm offers visitors a unique experience of encountering many friendly, domesticated animals up close. They also provide fully guided bespoke school tours which are designed to suit the children’s age and ability and often includes SEN groups.

Working on behalf of Longdown Activity Farm, water-saving experts Ecoprod Technique Ltd successfully applied to our first round of the Business Partnership Fund. They were awarded £8453.39 to carry out a water-saving project at the farm, benefiting both the environment and water bills.

The money was used to install 31 low flow sensor taps to washrooms and hand-washing stations around the farm which saves them 471,739 litres of water every year. A 6000-litre rainwater harvesting system was also installed to provide water to the much-loved duck pond. By collecting and using rainwater instead of water from the main supply, Longdown Activity Farm now saves 316,000 litres of water every year, plus money off their water bills.

Feedback on the water-saving project

Marcus Rose, Director and General Manager at Ecoprod Technique Ltd said:

"It was a great opportunity to work with a community events space like Longdown Activity Farm and see their passion for water-saving solutions. They plan to implement more going forwards, but this initial contribution from Southern Water definitely helped kickstart the process. We look forward to working with Bryan and his team in the future".

Bryan Pass, Co-founder and Operator of Longdown Activity Farm commented:
"As farmers, we are only too aware of the importance of a continued water supply; not only to provide our animals but to ensure that all our visitors have access to hand-washing units around the farm. We strongly believe that educating our visitors, young and old, will benefit us all in conserving water, which is why we are excited to share our five-year plan to reduce our current water usage by 50%. It is our intention to harvest water from the large roof space that we have at our disposal, which will then supply all animal drinking areas, and the flushing of the on-site toilet blocks. Watch this space".
