Report a pollution

When there’s a wastewater/sewer leak or pollution, we want to sort it as quickly as possible. Let us know if you spot something so we can take immediate action.

background

Why report a pollution?

Reporting a pollution directly to us helps minimise its impact, as we're able to take immediate action to stop the pollution and report it to the Environmental Agency. To report a pollution, simply fill out the form below or call us on 0800 952 1001.

Why do they happen?

We transport and store large quantities of wastewater along with the chemicals needed to treat it. We're careful to prevent them escaping and we continuously monitor our 40,000km network to spot any issues.

Pollutions can happen for a variety of reasons. The biggest cause is blockages in the sewer caused by wet wipes and fats, oil and grease (FOG). Equipment failure or an electrical fault at one of our sites or pumping stations can also cause pollution.

How to spot a pollution

If you notice any of the following near a river, watercourse, or manhole, a drain could be blocked and ultimately lead to a pollution:

  • Wet wipes, sanitary products, toilet paper, other bathroom items
  • Discoloured water, tending to be grey or black not brown
  • Soapy liquid or milky discharge
  • Human waste or sewage
  • Foul odours
  • Dead or distressed wildlife
  • Traces of petrol or diesel
  • Oil residue
  • Sewage fungus.

At certain times of year you may see a creamy brown scum on seas, rivers and lakes caused by algae. This can often be confused with a pollution. Find out more about Algal bloom and how to tell the difference.
