Working with others – Test and Itchen catchment

We want to work with other organisations that have responsibilities relating to drainage, flooding and protection of the environment during the development of the Test and Itchen DWMP.

Working together to co-create the DWMP is important as drainage and wastewater systems are often inter-connected with the systems managed and operated by others.

We held a catchment workshop for partners and stakeholder in September 2020. Participants discussed the findings of the risk based catchment screening and proposed additional catchment-specific planning objectives for the DWMP. The presentation provided at the workshop is available below and a short report of the workshop will be posted here in the near future.

We held a second catchment workshop for partners, stakeholders and internal representatives working on the DWMP in May 2021. Participants discussed the proposed investment strategy for the wastewater catchments within the River Basin and helped pick out the generic solutions that could address the identified risks as well as discussing how best to prioritise the wastewater catchments for attention. The presentation used at the workshop is provided below.

How you can help us develop the DWMP

We are planning to regularly update these pages with further information as we develop the DWMP for the Test and Itchen catchment.

We would appreciate being able to incorporate information and facts provided by partner organisations, especially on their long-term plans so we can co-create the DWMP and identify future investments in drainage and wastewater to respond to those future changes.

Between June and December 2020, we will be developing the baseline risk and vulnerability assessments (BRAVA) for each of the 11 river basin catchments in our operating area. We would like to engage and work with partners in these tasks.

From January and August 2021, we plan to use the baseline risk assessments to inform the options development and appraisal stage of the DWMPs. Continuing to collaborate with partner organisations during 2021 will enable us to co-create the strategic options that will guide our investment plans for the future.

The following questions may help to frame input you would like to make:

No. Question
1 What do you see as the current issues and risks in the Test and Itchen catchment?
2 What future pressures need to be considered during the development of the Test and Itchen DWMP?
3 What data or information can you make available to us on drainage and wastewater management issues?
Who we’d like to work with

The organisations we would like to work with in developing the DWMP include:

  • Environment Agency
  • Natural England
  • Hampshire County Council
  • The South Downs National Park Authority
  • Southampton City Council
  • Winchester City Council
  • Eastleigh Borough Council
  • Test Valley Borough Council
  • Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
  • Test and Itchen Catchment Partnership
  • The Wessex Rivers Trust
  • Portsmouth Water

By working with these organisations, we aim to:

  • identify any additional risks arising from interdependencies with non-water company drainage systems (i.e. where failure of one system has an adverse impact on another, such as loss of power causing disruption to telecommunications)
  • promote informed debate about acceptability of different levels of risk
  • co-create solutions to understand the related works of others and deliver, where possible, integrated solutions that provide multiple benefits to achieve best value to the economy, society and the environment over the long-term
  • identify solutions that offer best value to customers and the environment, ensuring robust, resilient and sustainable drainage and wastewater services in the long-term
  • show how our long-term plans support economic growth, resilient communities, protect and enhance the environment, and provide greater environmental resilience
  • facilitate innovation and the development of affordable, sustainable investment plans.
